When Yzerman took over, the D consisted of a bunch of borderline NHL defenders (other than Hronek who was rookie and Nemeth (who played in Europe last year), I don't think any of them played a full season in the NHL since)
Yzerman has acquired a bunch of legit NHl dmen since but other than Seider none are really top pair material. Most of the D is much maligned here but I think some of you expect too much. With the cap, teams just can't run with 4 top 60 in the league d-men. Guys not making the big bucks (and even some that are) are going to have holes in their game.
I was disappointed that they signed Holl not because I didn't think he could play in the NHL but because of wasting cap space on yet another vet without real top pairing ability (I wouldn't have minded a tough guy like Gudas or Zadorov despite not having top pairing abnility) because they provide an element we don't have much of) especially considering that we already had enough of them and then he even signed Petry after that.
Holl and Wallman getting scratched for most (Holl) or some (Wallman) was puzzling to me considering that I don't think most of the other vets were any better.
I didn't watch all of the games and may have missed some terrible games from Holl and Wallman but from what I saw, it seemed to me that Petry was the worst
Who was the worst d-man last year?

Petry. Mainly because he was asked to do too much. He's not a 2nd pairing D anymore. Unfortunately, he'll probably remain in that role next season.
Second worst was Walman. Like Petry, Walman was expected to handle way tougher minutes than he's capable of.

Petry was asked to do too much, but Holl played so poorly that he wasn't even asked to do anything by season's end.

Easy Petry. Any team that has Petry playing top 4 minutes is not a playoff team. Holl is 2nd mainly because he didn't even play half the season. The only defenseman playing where he should be slotted is Seider, everybody else was playing a role they should not be playing. Unless Yzerman pulls off a trade for a legit top 4 guy (and Edvinsson comes in solid as a top 4 as a rookie), that will be the case again next season with only Seider being a legit top 4 guy.
Amazing really how badly Yzerman has built this defense with all the wrong UFAs and not saying no to Montreal trying to dump Petry on him because "Michigan".

Petry, Holl was not used enough to get acclimated to the new environment.

Petry was misused he would have been fine limited minutes 3rd pairing
Holl couldn’t get in
Man I’m feeling down about this hopefully some kids make a push for the roster

Petry could get rocked in his own zone. But I was impressed with his play on the rush and the Ozone.
Looking at the numbers, and it's hard to believe, but he scored more 5 on 5 points than Seider and Gost.
His 23 points were the 2nd highest of his career (at five on five.)
I think you could get by with Petry on your RD.
Same with Gustafsson.
Not both.
