From what I have seen Axel is an outstanding skater, fun to watch. His acceleration and edgework are noticeably smooth. He makes Danielson's stride look a little clunky by comparison. Nate's gear changes are noticeable and look laborious.

I think he has a shot at being a really special player. I hope at a minimum he ends up being as good as Hronek. His ceiling is sky high IMO and even though he’s not the pick I would have made there, I’m super happy with it.

Ironically, if we had made the reach for ASP at 9 I would have been Ok with it as well. I’d soured on him a little bit before the draft, but when I was doing mocks and he was always off the board by 17 I was disappointed. Danielson would have been much more palatable at 17 as well. Now they are here and when we took them is irrelevant. I hope both can play big roles for us in the near future.

I’d still rather have drafted a forward with a shot at being elite with one of our firsts and think we passed on a number of guys in the 2nd round that could be elite.

When you look at Stevie’s career, he didn’t become a winner until he really embraced the two-way game. There’s an organizational bias towards players that are already there. Stevie learned to play that way but could always flash that elite skill when it was appropriate. We seem to be by-passing that elite skill and just aren’t getting any players that will be able to turn it on when really needed.

I agree with exactly what you’re saying. I would prefer to take high skill guys who show a decent motor and mold them in to two way players. I just dont see the upside in taking a bunch of hard working, two way guys with minimal offensive upside. This is how you become a fringe playoff team who has to grind out wins because you cant score enough goals.

Hronek scored 38 points in 60 games. That's what? A 54 point rate?
I don't see that as a floor for ASP.

Probably not, but hope is all we got round these parts

I like Kasper's and ASP's skating.
Danielson's wasn't so noticeable.

What nobody is saying about any of the Red Wings draft picks, except Seider: That's a special hockey player.

Maybe not a true floor, but at the same time this past season was easily Hronek's best in terms of point production. Hronek has averaged almost exactly 0.5 p/g over his 5 year career. Can we expect ASP to average 41-42 points/year over his first 5? I think it's definitely a possibility. Not necessarily a floor, but I definitely don't see that as his ceiling either.

Keep in mind too, Hronek has never played a full 82 game season. His career high in points was 39 in 64 games last year.
