“Alex was a good interview, had a real good self-assessment of where he’s at as a hockey player and what he needs to improve on and that’s impressive for an 18-, 19-year-old kid,” Draper said. “He’s that defenseman that has the ability to produce offense.”

Cotton demonstrated his offensive instincts, his ability to make plays and create scoring opportunities for teammates. He realizes his play without the puck is just as important.

“I’m a pretty deceptive skater, but what I have to work on is my defensive awareness and my backwards skating, just kind of everything in the D-zone,” Cotton said. “When I’m in the D-zone I seem to focus on playing defense and once it’s out I can switch my mind to what I’m good at.”
