That's what I was thinking. Sounds like the organization saying they'll commit to Mantha, but that Bert hasn't proved himself yet. But I think that Mantha only had one RFA year remaining and Bert had 2. 5.7 seems like a pretty fair deal. Seeing as how he hasn't cracked 30 goals yet though I do think it looks like we're paying for potential vs. past performance. I believe he'll live up to that and this will look like a very club friendly deal when this is over.

I wonder if Yzerman sees Bert as a 2nd line winger and wants to pay him like one?
Mantha is soft and will be hurt often his entire career. I hope he lives up to this deal, but what we saw in GR was a soft, floater.........Compared to a highly competitive, in your face hockey player in Bert. I have nothing against Mantha, he is a nice kid just going off what I watched in GR and last couple in Detroit.holytoledo wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 12:03 pmThat's what I was thinking. What more does Bert need to do to prove himself? Played 99% of all games in last 2 years and has 47 & 48 point seasons.

Interesting term. 4 years.
Yzerman is really playing his uncertainty to his advantage, if you ask me.
He's getting Mantha's best 4 years left at what still seems like an OK price.
Mantha is 30-31 at its end.
My guess is Mantha is in his prime right now. I doubt he ever tops his points-per-game for last year. But if he managed a healthy year, I can see him cracking 30 goals and 70 points.
The deal says 2 things
1) Yzerman didn't like him enough to make him a red wing for life.
2) He's probably trade bait at the end of year 4.

Yeah, unless the Wings are contending and Mantha turns into more of a 35-40 goal guy, this looks great. But odds are they aren’t and he should return a first plus when the time comes.
Bert kinda got jobbed, but who knows how it turns out. His AAV over the next 4 years could be near 5.7, especially if this covid situation looks better next year.holytoledo wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 12:03 pmThat's what I was thinking. Mantha is also only getting paid 4.5 MM this upcoming year.
