Obviously no one is surprised by this pick and overall, I’m pretty OK with it. My preference would have been to take a bigger swing here at Hage, Eisserman, Letourneau and especially in the case of Letourneau maybe trade back 4-5 picks vs. taking that big swing at 15.

This kid will almost definitely be an NHL player. He fits the Wings mold of forwards we’ve been drafting since the Riley Sheahan pick. None of those guys have turned out to be difference makers so far. In Larkin, Copp, Compher, Kasper, Danielson and now MBN we’ve got a nice collection of guys that are more or less basically the same to spread out across our top 9. Raymond has shown star potential, maybe Debrincat can be more productive and really Ras, Berrgren, Mazur, Fabbri, etc. are OK options to fill out the top 9 and even quality 4th liners. But when you start to factor in how many of these guys won’t be here at the same time, cap management and the lack of elite players this looks like a never ending cycle of mediocrity.

I honestly don't get the criticism. I am not excited about the pick, but I don't get the criticism. MBN was legitimately the best available player at that spot. At least, a strong argument can be made that he was the BPA. Unlike a year ago, when there were several better options available at 9, and the Red Wings decided to be conservative by selecting Danielson, there was a huge drop off after the first 12-14 selections.

Selecting Cole Eiserman would have been stupid. The Wings have been there, done that. Anthony Mantha was widely considered the best scorer of his draft year. Did he turn out to be a difference maker? No, he turned out to be an inconsistent, one-dimensional, lazy fuck, who is about to be on this 4th team (if he is so lucky). To me, that was the Eiserman pick. It was a reach at 15 and so was pretty much every other pick.

What I don't get is why Yzerman didn't move up in the draft? Clearly, there were opportunities to move up. Imagine if the embarrassing Walman trade was not for future considerations, but to move up from 15 to 11. The Wings could've had Sam Dickinson or Zeev Buium. I would've been a lot more excited about those picks. That to me is legitimate criticism for Yzerman and his draft team.

If you know you need difference makers, improve your position in the draft.

That said, I find it rather humorous that on one hand everyone constantly says how these are 18-year-old players and very different to project. But almost in the same breath people have decided that MBN is a middle nine player, who will never be a difference maker. Case closed. This is not a sexy pick, but it's still an 18-year-old player, who deserves a benefit of doubt and who can still develop into more than what people assume he is going to become. For Yzerman's sake, I hope he does.

These kids a prospects.
And sometimes, the smart bet is on a kid like Eiserman, still so young with an Aug. 29 birthday.
Yeah, he's small.
But he's bigger than Caulfield by a lot.
So I get the criticism.

I had Surin over MBN - and that's the only guy left over MBN for me.
But I'm fine with the pick.

I just wonder, when the fuck does Detroit get their Yzerman? Their McDavid? Their Drai? Their Barkov? Their Tkachuk.

That said - I do think MBN has some upside.
I like seeing the shot of the rush and the one-timer.

I could see a Franzen like career development.
Start as a depth two-way/defensive guy. Turn into a top sixer.
He's not as a big or heavy, but he's got a shot. And he's more engaged.
His playmaking is nothing special at all.

Yeah his resemblance to a right handed Franzen is almost too obvious to mention. Totally fine if he is not interested in playmaking. He's built like a winger and embraces it.
It was my understanding there would be no math in the debates.

That's exciting news. They wouldn't invite him to the training camp unless they thought there's a slight possibility that he can make the team. Especially since this will impact his SHL schedule.
