Rumblings around the Red Wings pursuing an extension with pending UFA winger David Perron have picked up over the past few days, according to reports from ESPN’s Emily Kaplan and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman (link to “32 Thoughts” podcast, 15:13 mark).
Not a good move unless it is at about $2.5M for 1 season. He could get more elsewhere, especially on another rebuilding club.
Y looking at extending Perron?

Perron is good culturally and on PP and ultimately the team's success rests with PP and PK. Wings still need to prioritize talent because special teams can come and go. Extend Perron a year but get a Hanifin like upgrade to D. That's a big ask with the contracts situation.
1.21 gigawatts! 1.21 gigawatts. Great Scott!

Yzerman's not retarded.
This is not a championship core.

On one hand, his production and ice time are down.
Last season, almost 17 minutes a night, 56 points.
This season, he's at 15 minutes, and will be closer to 40 points. He's lost most of his minutes ES.
It'll only be downhill from here.
On the flip side, he appears to be the vocal leader of the team who holds his teammates accountable. I don't think you can discount his importance by limiting it only to point production.
I can see it go either way. Personally, I'd let him walk. My priorities would be to sign Kane and Fischer and have an open spot for Berggren. We'll see where Kasper and Danielson are next season, but I would expect both to play in GR. I don't see any other kid making the team.
But, if they sign him to a 1 year low cap deal, it won't be the end of the world. Like I said, other than Berggren, no kid knocking on the door. Sprong will probably price himself out of Detroit. Some possibility for Kane.
However, I'd wait with the extension until the playoffs. It's too early to extend him without seeing how the rest of the season plays out.

My explanation for this (if true) is that Yzerman doesn't want to lose Perron for nothing, so he is assessing whether Perron is re-signing with the Wings or is getting moved at the trade deadline. If Perron is signed, I would expect a deal that favors the Red Wings - short term and low dollars.

Life goes on if you lose him for nothing.
