We're hitting yet ANOTHER slumber season for Red Wings fans.
Every couple days, I'll pick a Red Wings player and talk about their last season, where they are in their career. And where they're going.

Today, Dylan Larkin.

Age: 24
Contract: Year 3 of a 5 year deal that pays him $6.1M a year.
General Stat Line
17-18 82 games 16-47-63 -9 49.9% on faceoffs
18-19 76 games 32-41-73 -6 54.5% on faceoffs
19-20 71 games 19-34=53 -21 52.5% on faceoffs
Advanced Stats (5 on 5)
17-18 .64 goals/60 1.63 A/60 2.27 points/60 50.39CF%
18-19 .76 goals/60 1.17A/60 1.94 points/60 53,86CF%
19-20 .63 goals/60 1.1A/60 1.79 points 60 50.19CF%
Powerplay Production
17-18 .34g/60 2.7p/60
18-19 2.26g/60 4.85p/60
19-20 1.3g/60 3.64p/60

Last year was a bit of a down year for Dylan Larkin.
19 goals in 71 games was a steep decline from the career high of 32 goals in 76 games the previous year.
His point totals were also down.
His shot total was down by 64, though he played five fewer games.
His faceoff percentage was also down.
Larkin was bothered by a groin injury early.
He started the season at 6-10-16 through 28 games. He was -6.
His scoring picked up. He went 13-24-37 in his final 43. He was -17. 43 games is nice, because you can almost double it and have a full season's totals. 26-48-74. So let's say 25-46-71. That sounds about right for Larkin, right?

Larkin's time on the PK was cut again.
17-18 164 minutes
18-19 99 minutes
19-20 52 minutes

Larkin's 5 on 5 production with teammate
Larkin overall 12-22-34 in 1137 minutes 1.8 points/60
Larkin with Bert 9-17-26 in 821 minutes 1.9 points/60
Larkin w Mantha 5-11-16 in 466 minutes 2.06 points/60
Larkin w Fabbri 3-10-13 in 369 minutes 2.11 points/60

Key Questions
1) Will Larkin's production bounce back?
Based on that early season production dip, it's possible last year's production decline was caused by a) groin injury and b) Mantha's early injury. I'd say it's a pretty good bet Larkin returns to 70-point pace Larkin. I wouldn't bet on 30 goals though.
Prediction: Pace for 26-44-72.
2) Will Larkin be named captain?
If Yzerman doesn't name Larkin captain before the season, I think there are going to be real questions. What does it say about how Yzerman views Larkin? And if Larkin isn't named captain, what does that mean for his long-term future in Detroit? What does that mean, perhaps, for his short-term future in Detroit. How much is Larkin, at $6.1M a year, worth in a trade? I'd also have a few questions about Steve Yzerman, to be honest, if Larkin wasn't named captain.
Prediction: Larkin named captain.

Having perhaps the worst defence of the millennium subpar coaching and the gloom of so much losing has affected his production. I would love to see what he could do on a decent team (hopefully 21-22).
I don't think his trade value would be near his actual value because of his production which would most likely be much better on a better team
I think he is captain material and i think Yzerman wanted to get to know him better before giving him the C.

I was thinking the same thing. But as the team got worse, his production improved.

I think it was just one of those weird anomalies that occur over seasons like Cholowski's wild fluctuations in goals to assist ratio in his jr season from Prince George to Portland and then in the playoffs again. His goals to assists ration in his rookie pro season was like that too.

I'm wondering if Larkin is a real good 2C, and will he get better and really be a 1C when he's 27-28?

In 2018-2019 Dylan Larkin was a a 1C. It's just that at his best he's outside of the top 10 1Cs in the game, probably more in the 15-20 range of 1Cs. If you've got another guy in that range where you have a 1A/1B situation at C that can work, but if you don't, you really need an elite 1C. At 2C Larkin would be top 5 in his position, so if we could end up with a player that bumps him there, then we're elite down the middle and have a real shot at contending.

The NHL channel (NHL.com) just put out their top 20 defensemen, playing now - of course the Wings do not have a player in the top 20. Soon They will show the top 20 centers and wingers. I'm thinking Larkin won't be in the top 20 centers playing now. We'll see....

After last year, hell no, especially if Centers and wingers are one list.

i dont think it helps larkin any that we lack effective puck moving/shooting defensemen and elite wingers. The deck is really stacked against him. whether you are looking at our power play, or 5v5. Dont get me wrong mantha and bert are really good players and seem to have good chemistry, but if you dont have the defense that is causing turnovers/ changing possession, carrying the puck or making the outlet passes, or not effectively following the play up ice to support and finish, at the end of the day, the points wont be there. IT doesnt help either that the opposition doesnt have much else to focus on.

For sure. Our shit show on D impacts everything. Hopefully DDK is healthy this year, because otherwise the bottom pairing guys Yzerman brought in aren't really gonna change that. DDK - Hronek playing with the first line the majority of the time would go a really long way towards improving this team. If Nemeth - Seider ends up the 2nd pairing and Seider proves to be ready then we could be quite a bit better and get into that 70 point range.
