Looks like he was playing hurt last year. Could explain all the “healthy” scratches. I like Svechnikov and have been pulling for him, but I can’t blame Steve for not wanting to give a raise to a player who can’t stay healthy. Maybe he re-signs a two-way deal later. Maybe he goes elsewhere. Good luck to him either way.
I've always been a little surprised how little opportunity he was given in the last couple of years. This explains it.

Given his size, shot, and willingness to play the body, I thought he would make a dangerous 4th-liner -- certainly better than Abdelkader. But, if he can't stay healthy, it's best to cut him loose.

Another wasted Holland pick.

This tweet seems more in keeping with how the organization has felt. If you believe this they knew they effed up almost right away. Certainly well before Yzerman.

I think the Wings as an organization have soured on Russian players for a while now. We have passed on some good players in recent drafts. I thought that would change with Stevie at the helm, but it hasn't. We have gone Swede crazy again.

Just a god awful pick. Boeser, Samsonov, Konecny, Aho and Carlo all in range of that pick.

Yeah, the scouting staff should have known he’d lose years of development time to injury.

I was all for giving Svech more time to prove himself in Detroit, but Svech's decline started before the injuries.
He had a pretty nice D+2 year in Grand Rapids and then took a huge step backwards.

DY - QMJHL 55 games 32-46-78
D+1 - QMJHL 50 games 32-47-79 - Not great development
D+2 - AHL 74 games 20-31-51 - Solid rookie year in AHL
D+3 - AHL - 57 games 7-16-23 - Setback. (also played 14 games in the NHL)
D-4 - No hockey.
D-5 - AHL - 51 games 11-14-25 - Was injured for some time

I think Holland was still in Babcock "heavy player" mode when drafting Svech.

Regardless, I think Svech thinks, shoots and passes like a top 6 NHLer

I think blashill treated svechnikov similar to the way babcock treated maltby when he arrived and to a lesser degree draper. My opinion is the only reason draper lasted as long as he did with babcock was he had been a long time core player in a organization that valued loyalty. He sure wasn't utilized very well up to his encouraged retirement.

Blahill didn’t hamper this guy or any ones progress, they just weren’t that good. Has any much heralded prospect that didn’t work out here go on and flourish anywhere else? No! They were over rated and hyped up by an organization that thought they’re were still as good at scouting as they were in the days of Hanken Anderson.
