Good ol Gus is the only player left in the NHL who won a playoff series in a red wings uniform.

Deployment matters.
He got moved to the top line and took over. 55 points in his last 49.
Nashville has been an interesting team.

So in summary, we could have signed him for < 50% of the cost of Debrincat on just a 2 year deal, got better production and two-way play, kept our 1st & 4th, had Kubalik instead of Fisher or Sprong and let Gus either retire as a wing or go to a contender if we are out of it at next year’s deadline?

And maybe we’d have spent the extra $ on an RD that can stay in the lineup.

That's assuming he would sign here.

If only things worked like that. Nyquist hasn't hit 20 goals in 5 years so there was no reason to believe that at his age he was suddenly going to have a career year. He has a career high of 54 points that he had 10 years ago, so again no reason to think he would get anywhere close to 70 points this season. On the other hand, Debrincat is 26, maybe not even fully in the prime of his career yet and he had a 'down' year last season that was 12 points more than Nyquists career year.
I would have enjoyed seeing the chaos on this board if it came out that Debrincat could've been had for a 30th overall pick and a reasonable 4 year deal for a 26 year old sniper but instead went on to sign a 34 year old player who was surely declining at this stage of his career.

Money wasn't an issue in trying to find a RD. If Yzerman thought he would find a more permanent solution, there was more than enough cap space available to sign one, clearly either none were available or didn't want to sign here.

Too worked up about the game I guess, they clearly don’t deserve to get in with the way they’re playing but just wanna see some playoff hockey.

Not to mention that he plays with Forsberg, who's a legitimate 40-goal scorer. And, there's Josi on the back end with 80+ points, 30+ on the PP.
There's no way Goose scores 75 points in Detroit.
