I think he was not ranked by any of the major services until smahtscouting ranked him at 84 a few days ago. @dathockeydoe on twitter has him ranked as the 14th best draft-eligible in the WHL though, which he posted a while back.

The underlying model is similar to the one that underpins a lot of hockeyviz's vizs: https://hockeyviz.com/txt/xg5

The basic idea is that each shot's probability of being a goal is affected by location, type, who's on the ice for, who's on the ice against, etc. Given enough shots, you can isolate a player's impact on goal odds for shots taken when they're on the ice for, and when they're on the ice against.

The model doesn't have much to say at all about the actual shooter, at least directly. As noted in that writeup, the underlying assumption is that the whole team is trying to generate a shot, so who actually takes it is not so important for this model.

I have the additional challenge of estimating who's on the ice when a non-goal shot is taken, since the data sources I use don't provide that info.

I don't see why it applies to any round picks. It was just a poor decision they made. Same as any other round.

Many draft experts will often express something like “with all else equal, take the center” when discussing forwards. The position is much more coveted than wing, especially near the top of draft boards. Perhaps that’s why Cutter Gauthier is flying up rankings as this year’s draft approaches, finishing third among North American skaters in the final list from NHL Central scouting.

Gauthier, 18, will transition to center full-time next season for Boston College, and teams that have interviewed him this week at the combine see him in the middle, according to Corey Pronman of The Athletic. The 6’3″ forward is already an interesting mix of size and skill, meaning that news of his move to center makes him all the more intriguing as an option near the very top.

I don't see why it applies to any round picks. It was just a poor decision they made. Same as any other round.

agreed. it's a pity we bothered signing guys like svechnikov... didn't realize we could've dropped him for a 2nd.
