Draft - without taking Dvorsky in round 1.
Passed on Reinbacher and a couple others who are locks to be gone at 17.
Also passed on some of those Swedes who are ranked too low and always there at 41-43.

Detroit Red Wings
(9) Daniil But, LW
(17) Samuel Honzek, LW
--
We get two big LWs to balance out the smurfs on the right side. Both have top line potential. Honzek I think is the safer pick. But has the higher upside.
-

(41) Michael Hrabal, G
(42) Alexander Rykov, RW
(43) Noah Dower Nilsson, LW
--
Expectations lowered....But still, a decent haul.

Hrabal could be the best goalie in the draft
Rykov looks like a speedy, smart middle six RW.
Dower Nilsson is supposedly better than his brother. Better skill. Better IQ. Let's fucking hope so :)
-

(73) Kalan Lind, C
(117) Aydar Suniev, LW(
137) Matthew Mania, RD
--
Lind is a hard working energy line guy.
Suniev is a big skilled winger who can fire the puck.
Mania is 6'1 defenseman with lots of tools
-
(169) Charles-Alexis Legault, RD
(201) Ty Henricks, LW
-
One guy is an overager who played RD for the national champs.
The other is a big, skilled still has 2 years of USHL hockey before college.
Legault was considered a fast and physical RD with good size in his draft year - but he was always hurt and his IQ was questioned.
Henriks is just a big project. I wouldn't be upset if Henriks was picked around 73 if the scouts liked him.

Risky move taking But at 9 - but why not

Wings are already slow. They don't need another slow footed forward.

Who's slow?

Daniil But might have a rough first step or two, but people like his skating.
Honzek is even higher regarded than But in the skating department.

How many more smurf forwards with marginally better skating do we want?

Using realgud's simulator and trying to BPA the first round. A bit of a different look for me.

9 (1). Matthew Wood (RW) - Realgud has him ranked 8th, which is a lot more aggressive than any other site I've seen. He was ppg at Hlinka Gretzky, but looked slow. I'm not sure I see the appeal but this is what they called BPA.
17 (1). Colby Barlow (LW) - Another ppg from Hlinka Gretzky, but I find him to be less invisible in the play compared to Wood. I look at Barlow as a winger's winger... get into areas of danger and fight for the puck to assist or score. I know I'll pick him out when watching videos of his play.
41 (2). Danny Nelson (C) - He's 6'3", does everything, ppg at WJC, and can play everywhere including net front. I'm kind of surprised to see him available at 41.
42 (2). David Edstrom (C) - Okay, I see it now - Edstrom has really grown on me. I also don't expect him to make it to the 40's in the draft, though.
43 (2). Andrew Gibson (RD) - I see him as an offensive, puck controlling defenseman that can fill a spot on the right. Maybe could live up to be a 2nd pairing guy or a solid 3rd pair and powerplay specialist.
73 (3). Anton Wahlberg (C) - I saw him still there in the 3rd, and felt I had to grab him. I like watching Wahlberg in action, but I fear he'll never transition to NA ice.
117 (4). Dylan Mackinnon (RD) - Fluid, fast skater on defense, very strong, doesn't get burned. I think might be the yang to Gibson yin. I picked him out a few times keeping Canada steady in the Hlinka Gretzky.
137 (5). Alexander Rykov (RW) - I don't understand him being here, but I took him.
169 (6). Isac Born (C) - Man, I dunno. Overager, hasn't done much yet in the SHL for Frolunda. Maybe at the end I'm basing decisions on chin cleft.
201 (7). Damian Clara (G) - Looks as big as his 6'6" size would indicate. He's italian, and has played up with 20yr olds at WC and WJC. Sometimes looks stellar, sometimes looks lost. Worth a flyer, and I'd love to see him after another couple of years playing at his age level. Moving from Farjestad to Birnas.

Imagine Wayne Gretzky if he had hands. He could be like Dom Turgeon.

I wasn’t paying much attention to position and realized in the fifth round that i hadn’t pulled any defensemen. Interesting haul all-in-all though.

1.009 Oliver Moore (C)
1.017 Gabriel Perreault (RW)
2.041 David Edstrom (C)
2.042 Gracyn Sawchyn (C)
2.043 Gavin Brindley (C)
3.073 Trey Augustine (G)
4.117 Alexander Rykov (RW)
5.137 Carter Sotheran (RD)
6.169 Felix Unger Sorum (RW)
7.201 Victor Sjoholm (RD)

Gave it another go. Targeted Red Wings types that I don’t often pick unless they drop.

9 (1). Nate Danielson (C)
17 (1). Tom Willander (RD)
41 (2). David Edstrom (C)
42 (2). Charlie Stramel (C)
43 (2). Maxim Strbak (RD)
73 (3). Andrew Gibson (RD)
117 (4). Jayson Shaugabay (RW)
137 (5). Timur Mukhanov (LW)
169 (6). Kristers Steinbergs (G)
201 (7). Daniil Karpovich (LD)

(9) Daniil But, LW - I think he's probably got the upside I want at 9.
(17) Otto Stenberg, C - Small, tenacious forward who has show upside especially in international tournaments.
(41) Quentin Musty, LW - Big slowish skilled forward.
(42) Alexander Rykov, RW - Competitive, all-around winger.
(43) Carson Bjarnason, G - Big goalie
(73) Jakub Dvorak, LD - Big physical LD.
(117) Martin Misiak, RW - Big forward with skill.
(137) Dominik Petr, C - Underrated 6'2 Czech center
(169) Matteo Mann, RD - 6'5 RD in quebec. Very raw.
(201) Ty Henricks, LW - 6'5 forward in the USHL with skill
