Re: Red Wings Claim Gemel Smith - Givani's Brother
From forecaster
An industrious forward with very good skating ability, he owns the versatility to play both center and wing. Can play a shutdown role if required and is the type of player coaches like to put on the ice with the game on the line. Is a bit undersized (5-10, 190 pounds) for the National Hockey League, so he will need to get even stronger in order to maximize output at the highest level. Does not have the high-end skills to play a top-six forward role.

Givani would have to clear waivers, so he's not getting sent down.
This is a depth move. Gemel will be sent to GR. Or, do they still do that COVID purgatory thing? Put him there instead of Rowney.

If you claim someone off waivers don’t they have have to be with the big club for at least 30 days?

You may be right. I could have sworn that I remember an instance of a player being picked up by one team, then waived shortly after, and picked up by another team. ... didn't that happen to us and some minor league goalie?

I get the feeling that Stevie is adding a body here in anticipation of trading Namestnikov.
Probably Namestnikov straight up for Draisaitl.

From what i can see on CapFriendly, Wings only have 12 forwards and 7 defensemen on the roster so they won't need to send anyone down until someone comes off IR. They will have to sit someone to play him though unless someone has a day to day injury.
