Ken Holland's Last 4 Drafts in Detroit

Post by Pop Zeus »

Starting to look very ugly.

2015
19th - Svechnikov - gone.
Zero NHL games among the other 5.

2016
20th - Cholowski - Traded down to move the Datsyuk contract, passing up on Chycrun (and Fabbro, who ain't that impressive). Cholo is gone. Unable to win a job despite a promising start.
46th - Smith - Not a bad pick - but doesn't look like much
53rd - Hronek - Great pick, but expect his numbers to fall as he takes on a role more commensurate with his ability.
4 more picks have zero games played.

2017
9th - Rasmussen - Astonishing lack of hands/skill.
38th - Lindstrom - decent pick
9 other picks supplied zero games played.

2018
6th - Zadina - Starting to look like an awful pick.
30th - Veleno - hard to say. Can't really complain
33rd - Berggren - too early to say
36th - McIsaac - Things look a bit bleak for him.
There are some other guys in the org, like Seth Barton and Victor Brattstrom - but they don't seem too promising.

Svechnikov isn't helped by the surrounding pucks
16. Barzal
17 Connor
18 Chabot
19 Svechnikov
20 Eriksson Ek
21 Colin White
22 Samsonov
23 Boeser
24 Konecny
25 Roslovic

Cholowski's draft will look bad because of Chycrun - but the other guys drafted between 20-30 look pretty weak.

The Rasmussen/Zadina drafts are starting to look awful.

If these 4 drafts had been handled well, the Wings rebuild would essentially be over - and just a matter of time.

Speaking of Ken Holland, somebody put together a twitter thread taking a stroll down memory lane looking at his last decade of signings.

well that was the saddest draft/FA signings I've seen in a long time. We got more bang per buck with Namestikov than we did most of holland's FAs, and while hes not bad, he's far from great.

Oilers fans are finding out why the majority of Wings fans were happy that Yzerman replaced Holland but wished it would have been done years earlier instead of letting Yzerman leave to Tampa and letting Holland put the Wings in a huge hole with a lot of bad contracts and little in the way of good prospects.

Holland has done a horrible job in Edmonton adding the depth to the studs he inherited. He also managed to somehow make their defense even worst and never addressed their goaltending. Now he's panicking and will sign Kane. I expect some more bad moves from him from now to the deadline...just hope Yzerman can somehow take advantage of it by taking one (or more) of Broberg, Lavoie or Holloway. Let us be on the other side of a Holland deal where he sends a young prospect and pick for a crappy past his prime vet.

Honestly, outside the goaltending, I don't think Holland has been that awful.
The Hyman thing made me LOL.
But is it really that awful?
Duncan Keith? Sure. Overpaid. But he's still a fairly good defenseman and he cost virtually nothing.
Tyson Barrie's deal is pretty decent.

What could be killer is Darnell Nurse's deal. He needs to return to last year's form or that $9.25M a year is going to stink to high hell.

That $4M raise for Nurse is going to be hard to absorb next year when you still have to sign Pulju and Yamo and a 2 goalies, really.

Right now, it looks like the defense is pretty good.

Nurse Barrie
Keith Bouchard
Koekkok Ceci

Next year, they'll add Broberg. (20 games, 2-11-13 +7 in the AHL)

Two things really surprise me about Edmonton.
1) Tippett runs a bullshit system. This guy was a Babcock/Hitchcok guy in Arizona. He doesn't look like he's running any kind of system in Edmonton. Maybe because:
2) Tippett can't stand up to McDavid. McDavid has zero commitment to defense. I've heard John Tortorella talk about this on NHL Network or wherever he opines.

Jurco, Sheahan, AA trade, Perlini, Turris... he's trying to find another Cleary/Samuelsson, but all he's doing is filling roster spots with trash.

You have to do this when you pay someone $13M.

Next year:

4.2 in dead cap.
30 mil in McDavid, Draisaitl & Nurse
16 in RNH, Keith, Hyman & Barrie
9 in Kassian, Fogle & Ceci

59 mil or so mil 10 players. Gonna leave him with 22 or so to ice 12 more.

If Klefblom comes back that’s another 4.

Yamato, Pulu & McLeod are all RFAs.

I wonder how much more we’d have to give than Raymond, Cossa, Zadina & a first for Draisaitl?

Fabbri - Draisaitl - Vrana
Bert - Larkin - Berggren
Namestnikov - Suter - Veleno
Smith - Stephens - Rasmussen

UFA - Seider
Edvinsson - Hronek
Oesterle - Lindstrom

Ned
UFA

Get Lindholm as that UFA & we’re in business. Everyone in that bottom 6 except Smith & Stephens could possibly slot up the lineup further and Namestnikov, Veleno, Rasmussen, Suter & Stevens can all play C.

Kenny gets a first line winger, a guy he was thrilled to take at 6 overall, a first, a potential goalie of the future and Draisaitl’s cap space.

Problem with that trade is we all know Holland would never have the balls to make a trade this big unless Daisaitl asks for a trade.
