Is it just me, or is there a "grass is always greener" myth about "next year's" draft.

It’s felt that way for the last few seasons for sure. I do believe this next draft is a little bit more special than the last three have been, but you never really know.

Projecting what a sixteen-or-seventeen-year-old kid is going to be going into their draft season isn’t easy, and kids change a lot at that age. Wright had a reputation as an ultra-competitive, number one center going into his draft year. Did his reputation go to his head? Was he miscast? Did he regress? He sure wasn’t branded a high compete player by draft day.

Bedard and Michkov are both billed as high intelligence, high skilled prospects. They’re both pretty undersized, which is probably everyone’s biggest concern about them. Well, Michkov has the Russia factor too, but for his caliber of player, that’s probably overstated. It’ll be interesting to see if they lose some hype as the year progresses.

Michkov sustained a knee injury on a hit from Alexei Emelin in a KHL preseason game, could be out 2 months.

Bob McKenzie's preseason list is out. Not too many surprises.

New ranking from Craig Button (TSN) has 6'1" winger Eduard Šalé ranked second. Watch him here, here, and here.

The contract situation with Mitchkov. He’d be 21 when he comes over and have tons of experience in a men’s league. He’d project to be an immediate impact first line player - and be on a 3 year ELC. That’s an ideal situation for a team at the bottom right now that needs more pieces than just him - assuming he signs. He might opt to keep making that KHL money instead of taking an ELC. He’s likely to be a star in the KHL at that point too.

Is he really just 5’8” and 146 pounds!

It's always hard to know how tall guys really are outside the combine. Elite Prospects lists Michkov at 5'10" and 159. He looked pretty tiny to me last time I watched him play, but who knows.

Artyom Kashtanov is an interesting prospect given a C grade by NHL CSS. He's a huge forward putting up nearly a point-per-game on a relatively lousy Avto Yekaterinburg team whose best player last year, Viktor Neuchev, has moved up to the KHL. I haven't seen him play yet, but he's 6'6", so I suspect he'll get a look or two from Yzerman and co. Interesting name to keep tabs on at the very least.

As far as big boys go, Michael Hrabal is another giant to keep an eye on as the only goaltender to receive an A grade. His number are pretty intimidating, dominating the USHL on a pretty underwhelming Omaha team.
